It appears that most of the replies thus far have been on the money as to the identification of the car. I'd be happy to offer my opinion on the car as an owner of one of the other cars on the 81 built. And I have seen 3 of the other 4-spped cars over the years.

PM me so we can chat a bit more.

It is unlikely that it has a 3.64 rear. This was a ratio used on 68-70 Buick 8.2 rears. You should have a 8.5 in a 71 model which did not have a 3.64 ratio.

No rust??? Bumpers, fenders, hood, deck lid, etc... I see plenty of it Peter. Looks to me it has been in a salt mist spray for many years. You never really know how much rust is there until you take it ALL apart and remove it.:idea2:
Great find, but would be far GREATER if you can document the STAGE 1 option!

Dan, You are correct about the rust but I meant underneath the car. No rot I should have said. 3 42 is the correct rear. I'll email you later we're going to drop the tank today or tomorrow. Any other easy to get to places for other build sheets etc..? I have tracked down two owners the original owner is from NJ and thats were it stayed until 1992. more later...

Interior sheet under the passenger seat springs perhaps but it will not likely be helpful on a stage 1 verification issue.

Did you look under the driver's dash around the A pillar?

No Jim, I haven't taken anything apart yet or looked for build sheet. I didn't know that it was necessary until last week when I was told you can't get info from Sloan or Wayne Roberts on 1971 cars.

You may not have to except for the tank.

Look under the passenger seat with a flashlight. You may see someting that appears to be a card with handwrting on it.

Look under the dash with a flashlight around the base of the A pillar. You may see the end or a piece of a sheet tucked in there.

The real problem is that ONLY the build sheet will prove stage 1 or not. The Fisher body sheets will only tell us what we already know, and Flint cars sometimes have them on the tank (and sometimes not).

"The real problem is that ONLY the build sheet will prove stage 1 or not."

That's not quite true. If you want to "document" a 71 car without a buildsheet then you need to do it the old fashioned way, like we used to do before the microfilm was found.

What you have to do is go through all the parts on the car and check them for being both part number & date code correct. You also need to "document" everything by taking pictures of all the parts in question.

If you have a relatively un-molested car, the sheer number of correct part#/date code correct parts would be staggering, and the chances that someone spent the time "putting" the car together reduces down to nothing.

Once you have this, and it takes a considerable amount of time to put the "documentation" together, both you (the owner) and a prospective buyer can be assured that the car is legitimate.

That's how we did it in the old days, we did the homework. You guys have gotten too used to having it easy, with making a few phone calls or posts and getting the info handed to you.

Sometimes you need to dig the foxholes.

Duane is correct IF he has all the stage 1 parts there, and the date codes are correct. Problem, he already stated the stage carb is NOT there. No dist pict or numbers (but would that really prove anything with ALL the fakes out there anyway)? Now there is the Stage pump, chrome valve covers and internally a stage cam. Nothing there would convince me of it being a factory stage 1.

The only hints we have seen so far are::idea2:
    1) Stage 1 emblems & air cleaner decal.:pp

Now he claims but has NOT produced photos of:
    1) Complete vin on the 455 block. In the photo I "think I can see two bottoms of the number eight". That is only two of the eight digits, but since there are three eights in the vin, I assumed the rest and believe it is at least a 455 car...
    2) TS code on the block! Where is this picture AND the rest of the code? A must. If everything on the deck looks good, then I'd be inclined to say it is a stage.

Now someone said unmolested car??? Please, how did the red paint get on the side of the stage fender emblem and why does a non a/c car have an a/c dash pad, blue paint on the steering wheel? The 60,000 miles could EASILY be 160,000... I'm sure it has been repainted (at least partially) in last 39 yrs, but it certainly has not been recently.

Sorry, but you have to prove it to be a factory 71 stage 1 conv 4 speed. With that said, you' re on the right trail. Spray the markings with brake cleaner before you take the pictures, it will help! :bglasses:

It is a great car find, now lets see if we can take him to the promise land! Best of luck, Dan
