That is funny. What is even funnier is how a bunch guys can be talking about a 18 sec car one second then this the very next.

My one and only import encounter - late 90's leaving Sacramento Raceway after Saturday night thrashing. 11:00 p.m. no traffic whatsoever, pull up to a major intersection in right lane. In fast lane pulls up some kind of import (don't recall) with all the junk hanging from body panels. Light turns green import takes off, I ease into the throttle and than floorboard halfway across intersection. I go around the import in 2nd gear with tires smoking and exhaust screaming as I pass. Next red light intersection, the import owner gives me thumbs up (wasn't expecting that) - so we both pull over and talk cars for a while - pretty cool!

Nail head power.... My brother used to have the Warn dealership in Reno Nevada, He used to put a lot of nailheads into jeeps. In 65 he called me to tell me there was a 48 jeepster for sale and to go buy it.. 2 weeks later he called to say ther was a 57 buick with suspension problems for $ 25.. then he found a stick flywheel and I added a ford 9 " and ford HD trans and front brakes...THe Nail head made one sweet ride. good economy. lots of power. cornered better than the mustangs ( I was working as an engineer at ford...) I beat a new at the time gto with it ... I just scored a 401 or 425 with 15 minutes run time after a rebuild.. I plan on putting it into a 40 chevy half ton ...

fourfiftyfive My car is a mess........

I was driving down back road to avoid rush hour traffic in my caprice... and I was going pretty fast... then I come up behind an import with all the tacky ricer stuff... doing like 40mph... he heard the rumble of that caprice, and went a little faster, so I sped up, then he went fast and so on til we were going just about all-out around corners and just plain having fun... turns out he was going to the same store I worked at... we ended up bench racing for a while lol... cool for an import guy lol... the first thing out of his mouth when we got there was "don't kill me" (joking of course since I'd followed him for about 5 miles) the next thing was "how the hell did that big old boat stay with me in the corners?! I know they go like hell in a drag race but damn!" ...I miss my 9C1... speaking of that circuit city... theres STILL patches all over the parking lot from my car lol

my '68 skylark with a bench was O.K. for the teenage romp but i found my '87 GN worked much better with the reclining seats.. also the car was just narrow enough and the seats just close enough to be PERFECT for "R.H." if ya know what i mean:TU: :birthday:

My GN beat quite a few "ricers" in it's time, when it was stock...

One day, about a week or two after I bought the car, i went to the local drive-inn to get a burger.. saw a friend of mine who i knew owned a nearly stock (had exhaust) '00 honda civic.. asked him if he's like to have a speed contest, and we agreed upon $10.00 (all he had).. when i was about to leave, he asked me to rev the engine, so I VERY CAREFULLY tapped the gas so as not to let the turbo spool up.. he just grinned ear-to-ear thinking he was going to make a quick buck.

So later that night we meet up at "the spot".. we line up, and BAM, I PUT BUS-LENGTHS ON HIM.. (I should have sandbagged him). so we go back and his friend is all pissed, saying he "couldn't drive".. The another friend wants to line up in his riced out '00 mercury cougar, so I oblige.. We lin up, leave the line and he pulls half a car on me but within 60 feet I was already pulling on him and about to do ANOTHER "bus-length" run, but we aborted and met back up.. and he asks "Does that thing have a turbo?!?!?" so i reply, "Why, yes, I forgot to mention that." SO he sarts to get mad until I pointed out the hood badges which said just that, and asked him if he could not read.. "Well I thought it was a Monte Carslow" LOL...

So then they think they're gonna get me and they call out the local ricer "team" which brings out their "fastest" car, heavily modded early '90's Integra (I believe it had an engine swap of some sort, but I'm not a Honda guy). On our way to another "spot" I had my 230lb friend in the car and my friend all alone in his '92 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX tries to race me, which i promptly smoke.

We get out to the new "spot" and line up. The integra and I are dead even, then after 2nd gear I pull away from him.. I have about 5 car lengths on him and we let off and coast to a stop sign about a mile away. At the stop sign he tries to go again, and i put bus-lengths on him this time. We ALL meet up and he's coming up with all kinds of typical ricer excuses.. I missed a shift, there's a weird vibration, etc. His ricer fanboy "teammates" are saying "this is bullsh!t" and they finally take off, with severely hurt pride..

I only made $10.00 that night, because everyone else was chicken. They got introduced to the Buick Grand National that night.. :TU:

Another night, I had four people in my car, and my friend in his '92 Eclipse GSX is alone in his car again.. we line up at THE big intersection in town, we were turning left, he was in the inside lane, we were in the outside lane.. we take off and I am quickly pulling past him, having to let off the gas to stop the rear end from going sideways.. Needless to say, he was unhappy.

Another night, while going home, I was being paced by a BMW M3. We catch a light together and needless to say, "it's on"... We get the green and I quickly put 3 cars on him and I shut down.. He does the typical "ricer flyby" flipping me "the bird" the entire way.:TU:

ANOTHER time, I finally caught an acquaintance of mine (who ALWAYS talked sh!t about my car and had TALL tales to tell) without an excuse, in his "so super quick" 25th anniversary edition Trans Am.. His young and impressionable brother was in the passenger's seat and my girlfriend was with me.. We line up and on 3 honks we left, he just roasts the tires and I leave him in the dust.. i slow down and wait for him, and when he comes up, his little brother's mouth is agape and his eyes are the size of saucers:eek2: He wanted another shot, so we hit it again.. same deal, but this tie he hooks hard and pulls a length on me, but i get even with him quickly when the boost picks up (6,500 feet elevation), and pull away, finally putting about 3 cars on him.. he and his brother are SHOCKED and didn't say another word..

KEEP IN MIND, ALL OF THESE RACES WERE DONE WHEN I HAD NO CLUE ABOUT FOOT BRAKING AND BUILDING BOOST ON THE LINE, WHILE MY OPPONENTS WERE "EXPERIENCED" IN RACING THEIR CARS, AND MADE MONEY QUITE OFTEN.:Smarty:

WES (sorry for the LONG post)

Wes, I didn't realize how ignorant kids are when it comes to the GN. I got my license in 1985 so I've always respected them. It was nice reading about how you gave them a lesson in Buick.

It's not the nicest one by any means but it's got some nice upgrades for an 11 sec recipe with potential for 10's with a few more things I haven'd installed yet. Big front moune intercooler, headers and exhaust.

    The front ends look mean.

Grand Nationals were like factory sleepers. Most kids my age would think that it's a grandma car. Probably because it looks like one until they get stomped!

the factory cars on the road in the 80's were pathetically slow. Even the factory performance cars were slow by muscle car or today's standards. I was fast with a 70 Buick 350. I can only imagine how much fun it would have been to drive a BBB in the 80's.
