I think the age old HEMI vs Buick battle intrigue`s alot of people because the shoot-out consist of two 3800lbs musclecars. I doubt the same attention would have been given to the shoot-out if the Mopar camp decided to use a 3200lbs Hemi Barracuda/Dart or something against a 3800lbs Buick. Who would have been instrested? I believe the 427 Chevy will find it`s proper place in the food chain once installed in a apples to apples car. :Comp:

DD, One such chapter did exist, somewhere up in Canada. Diablo 3800 lbs '70, Yellow GSX, and light weight '70, Lime Green Hemi Cuda. Shootout only lasted for 1 out of 3 rounds though, Cuda gave up after round 1 :Do No: . Is this 50 Fastest List correct? Joe x.

    Joe,
I know there is a later one that shows the '69-1/2 Road Runner 440-6bbl as #3. This is the Cecil Co. raceway test where Ronnie Sox eventually ran 12.91 @ 110mph

Proof in the pudding doesn't satisfy some!
Mopars started this back in 1984 or 1985 saying
Buicks run like they were tied to a tree and Buicks
are "SLUGS"...well, to coin a pharse..." Buicks are
slugs..the kind that are fired out of a 44 magnum!

Roy Badie of Largo had a big ol smile while sitting behind the wheel of his equally big 1953 Cadillac Series 62 convertible, which is light yellow, and gorgeous.

He does have the distinction of starting this whole Hemi vs Stage 1 feud. I wonder if FAST racing would have developed the way it did if it wasnt for that famous race?

I hear what you're saying, Dave, but there are a lot of ways to measure "apples to apples" in this hobby. It's true that the Chevy's have the advantage of some weight savings. But, others might be quick to point out that the HEMI "apples" have an extra carburetor.

Okay, sincerely that got my attention! I'll bite. Can you tell us any more about this Dave? That's exciting news -- When? Where? Details?

    WRONG!

The 3200 pound Hemi Dart/Barracuda that Dave is refering to is the 68-69 A-body. They are comparible in weight to a Vette.

The 70 and later E-body Hemi Cudas (like the one in the shootout) are every bit of 4000 pounds race weight.

So who is in for the the 10 car Hemi VS Buick shootout? How about you Eric, what can you bring? :Brow:

Or is the entire Buick Club going to continine to hang their hats on the accomplishments of Lassiter and Gessler? I'm going to buy those guys a back back brace, they are carring a heavy load! :beer

Sounds like a neat little side show for the June F.A.S.T. race at Martin! Best 2 of 3 during qualifying on Friday? It will only slightly divert the spotlight from the fast(er) "oranges"! :spank:

    the Vettes weight 3400 - 3500 pounds

Waynes weighed 3575 in it's last Pure Stock appearence

    so I guess a 3200 pound Hemi Dart is a banana .......

Waynes car (in 04) had 100 pounds of lead ballast in the rear crossmember that had been poured in by the former road racing owner. Add that to Waynes 230 pound frame plus some fuel and that puts the L88 Vette under 3200 pounds dry.

I disagree...I'm pretty sure the Hurst/Hemi cars still have 200 pounds or so on an L88 'Vette...the L88 & ZL1 cars were a class *behind* the Hurst/Hemi cars. In fact, for the 1969 season, NHRA outlawed the Hurst/Hemi cars from S/S...they gave the racers 2 choices: either hang '69 model sheet metal & such on the '68 Hurst/Hemi cars or get bumped to A/MP...

Oh, and Dave...about your "apples to apples" comparison...I think I'll bring a "banana"... :Brow:

    3575???

My LT1 was 3380 w/ 1/2 tank of gas and me in the driver seat. That makes the car 3240 w/ the gas. This was w/ everything but a spare tire. A/c compressor, power steering, OEM glass, stereo, Mid-America speakers in the back, tilt/tele, headlight actuators, blah, blah, blah all installed and functional.

    What's the weight difference between a sbc/ 4 speed and a bbc/THM 350?

Apples, oranges, lemons, bananas ..... It's a full blown fruit salad ......

And Joel is correct. A Hemi E-Body in stock trim is NOT a light car.
