John called me today about 4:11 PM. I was on my way to the Oyster Bay cruise night. Engine arrived safely, and the packaging was perfect. I'll update when we get ready for the install.

With Steve's (71stagegs) help, I modified the RobbMc 1/2" pickup. We added an elbow and short length of tubing so that it would draw from the back of the tank.

    Larry,

Has Steve ever put a setup like that in a GS tank?

Kind of wish I had done that..

Don't hit the gas unless you're pointed straight and there is nothing in the way.. But ... do hit it often..

    Jim,
That is the Robb Mc 1/2" pick up. The fuel pickup just goes straight down. I figured it might be better to have the pick up point facing the rear of the tank to lessen the chance of it becoming uncovered from fuel slosh when the tank was getting low. I like to race it with about 1/2 a tank. Steve had his stock pick up modified to 1/2" and did the same thing. Soldered on an extension pointing straight back, and cut it at an angle for a larger opening. I cut some off the tube, and fit the elbow so that it is at the same height that it was before, just facing the rear of the tank.

    Larry,

I totally agree with what your doing there, I am just worried about you actually getting it in the tank.. the hole is pretty small, and the extension complicates the ability to fit it in the hole.

I am pretty sure that is why the guys at RobMC ship it like it is.

I have some experience with big pickups, and getting the whole works in the hole is the issue.

Typically, what your going to do is get the float in first, and then work it around to get the tube in, but your extension will complicate that. You will see what I mean when you get to the tank.

Be a good idea to find someone close to you who has a A body tank out of the car (68-72) and test fit it, before you tear everything apart.

That is why I was wondering if Steve had put one exactly like that in. I have no doubt it will feed the beast, if you can get it in the hole!

Yup, I understand. Steve said it worked. If I have to, I'll just shorten the horizontal copper tube, and it will still face the rear of the tank. I'll see if someone has a tank I can try and fit it into in the mean time.

My 71 tank had a baffle in it that ran side to side IIRC it was behind the fuel pickup and had little semi circle cutouts for fuel to flow back to front.. And the fuel filler tube ran all the way to the front of the tank.. Does that sound right??

If it makes any difference.. I've made 1/8 mile passes with less than 1/4 showing with no problem.. But I wouldn't push it.. That's pulling well over 1G.. I have the same Robb MC pickup.. In the 1/4 mile it would give more time for the fuel to find the back of the tank though..

I think there are some differences in the tank baffling from year to year. If I have to shorten the horizontal portion of my pick up, that is what I will do. A cutting wheel will make short work of it.

I don't think getting it in the hole will be a problem..
