Funny you mention "density altitude", I have been trying to explain it to guys for years, but none of them get it, and it makes a huge difference in how an engine runs.

    Larry,

Sorry to be late to the party but kudos to you for sitting back and being a test subject, the results and benefits of which may help a whole bunch of us die-hard Buick folks in times to come. All the results from the early tests including issues with the first dynomometer output has had some of us sitting on the edge of our seats for a long time.

There has always been a big disconnect between max effort big block Buick engines for the track and what could be a streetable combination for a casual cruise that still has some grunt. Before the TA aluminum heads came around in the late '80's, it was one or the other. I think your new engine and the new hydraulic roller cams are bridging that gap in a very good way.

More power to you, and thank you for sitting in as a guinea pig in the meantime. I'm proud of how my current engine performs, but I'd take no bets that it would do as well as your new one in your car, and if you had mine you'd be cursing the brakes anyway.

Yup, mine was pretty much a flat $1,000 for the roller cam, shim kit, distributor gear and of course the hydraulic rollers. I'm still running stamped steel stock rockers. I only have around 8,000-9,000 or so miles on mine since I got it back together last August. It's been in body shop jail since June :ball: Though it's in the picture of the Editor's letter in the current Car Craft magazine (with the Anti-Tour), that was the last big trip it made.

Jim, the only thing keeping me from buying one of your engines is my own pride. I like working on and building my own engines, fortunately because I build my own I work on them often  It also means they are at least two magnitudes of order under yours. Again awesome job and thanks again for sharing. Ed's engine really has my curiosity peaked.

Wow...Jim put like Buick mags on the trailer to haul it to you? Nice touch!!!

Nah, that open trailer has had Buick mags on it for about 20 years...

Yuk.. 120 mi round trip to the ship terminal..

I'm going forklift shopping, as soon as I have a place to put one.

I finally found some reason to miss the old shop.. that one was easy for engine shipping, just have the semi back up to the dock door and pallet jack it in.

'Course then again, I have saved enough in 7 months of shop rent (21K :eek2:) I can buy a pretty nice truck for the ride..

Stay tuned for the first runs.. I recommend a set of depends for the first serious test drive.

Last car I drove with 600 HP, would spin the 275/60/15 BFG's... at 60 mph...

Which is why I'm putting the drag radials on from the git-go. And yes, I'll will have lots of changes in underwear for Cecil. Lets see if I can even hook this thing up to begin with. Might have to do a wussy leave at first and see what it traps at. Car has no A/C now, so it should be right around 4000 lbs with me in it.

I have a question to Larry or Jim, I did not see the oil pressure adjuster or the booster plate on the
timing cover. Just did not need these items? Love the new motor gentleman, keep the news coming.:TU:

This is a fresh TA cover set up by Jim. I think Jim uses a white spring with maybe a shim. The oil pressure (look at the dyno sheet) was excellent, and it was taken from a point at the REAR of the motor.

Fabulous oil pressure! Especially at the rear of the engine where it is most needed.
Drag Radials full time for you my friend.:TU: Watch your tire pressures at the track,
for max hook up. Fun ride man :3gears:

Dear Larry and V-8 Buick horsepower junkies,

Congrats to Jim and wishing your "baby" a safe and speedy trip Larry!!

    I repeat . . . . . GULP!!!

Jim is this not making me feel good!! :eek2:

    Cheers, Edouard :beer

P.S. So tell me, how do you slip an engine a few valiums until you get used to it!!

    Nick,

Booster plate yes, Adj reg no..

just the white spring with a blueprint build on the TA cover, modified 455 fiter housing.

Dyno sheet is with Gibbs BR30 breakin oil at 160*

I have 36psi at 800 rpm in my notes...

With the oil at 180-190, pressures will drop about 5-7 at rpm, and about 10psi at idle, but they are still in the preffered range.

I'll try Jim. It's not going to happen for a few weeks I think. John mentioned around Labor Day.
