Refineries shut down with covid, and have not come back online.Would you want to invest in a business that has been targeted to be shut down? Govt is now asking those companies to pretty please open them back up because fuel is to expensive. Your targeted for closure, so why invest when you can just profit from what you have running.

This crap is getting outta hand, it’s getting to the point where your working to pay for your fuel to get to work, go home pay your Mortage, MAYBE buy groceries, MAYBE keep up on your utilities, and credit cards your using to buy fuel cause your outta cash. That leaves ZERO for ups or extras.
Sounds like China, we’re all going to be living in boxes, retailers are going to go under because people don’t have money for “stuff”

If you own a truck and have to drive 40 or more miles one way it is going to cost you a fortune to drive to work.
I get 18 mpg avg with a 2013 Ford F150 with the 5.0 engine has a lot of power but there again it gets half of the mileage as my Toyota XRS with the high revving motor it will get 33 all the time.

I drove to 3 jobs that was 45min- 1 hr away and I would have to get gas in the Toyota 2 times a week I could make it about 4 days then had to fill up again. Now if I drove the Truck It would be double on the gas.

I don't know what we are gonna do but the way we are going about this is totally stupid and totally dumb, If this is such a great idea why do the people in that run the show step in on what is being sent to us and show us how it is done.

Not one has a totally electric car now do they? If so I bet not many! Too much Money!
My brother in law has a Toyota Prius and it gets 50 mpg seems to be the best of two worlds, he told me he is just now putting brakes on it and it is 10 years old now and has over 180,000 miles, this car has been good for him, but he does live in Texas and does not have to deal with real cold weather like up in the north.

What ever happened to that Ran on clean burning Natural gas That was promoted for the past 25 years, did this just go out the window or what.

While my cost on nearly everything has gone up I cannot keep raising prices to compensate. Everyone is tapped and can hardly afford my services at current pricing. Have no choice but to pay the fuel prices which is now 1200- 1500 a month. Yesterday I had 2 customers where I fixed the problem and got them back up and running but they had no money today to pay. " Just get it to me when you can"

I was waiting for someone “in the field” to comment on the current state of people and money.
I was thinking of this the other day, business owners will raise their prices, but only to compensate for fuel costs, not to raise profits. But the business owner cant keep raising prices, so he takes it up the butt, then the poor customer pays everything that they have, or pays zero, and goes on the honor system.
    It’s sad for sure.

My local station has increased the debit card limit to $250.00 at the pump. Don't know if that also applies to credit cards as I don't use mine for gas.
Price yesterday was Cdn $1.899/litre or $8.62/Imp gal.

Gas would come down 3 cents a gallon.

Eventually there comes a point where the customer can't afford the service and the business can't charge enough to keep the business operating because his operating costs have went up. It's a vicious circle.

Lol that would be great but I’m sure it wouldn’t drop that low, Lolol.
Even 1.50 a gallon, people would be able to pay for “stuff”
We wouldn’t drive more than we do now just because the gas is cheaper, but it would free up monies for other expenses

At QuikTrip, they've got a pump start card that lets you pump gas first and then you go in a pay when you're done. I've only ever used it to pay with cash, but I don't see why I couldn't pay with a card when finished.

I had to fill out some paperwork to get it that had my name and address, etc. But I don't recall needing to have any bank account or credit card info on there to get it. I think drivers license number was needed.

Check and see if your gas station has a pump start card option.

When 1500 private jets fly into Switzerland to discuss how to further limit the peasants availability to drive their own vehicles there is a clear hypocrisy.

The irony is that I am spending far less on fuel than I was six months ago. I used to go to the office every day (32 miles each way), whereas now I work from home unless I have a good reason to be at the office. My spending on luxuries has also gone way down, since I'm saving my money for a rainy day (and boy does the sky look threatening!).

I highly doubt I'm the only one doing this, and this will have great effects on our economy.

I wonder how much all of those million and billionaire's space flights are contributing to global warming! Maybe they will have to convert to electric rockets. There will probably be more charging stations in space than on earth!

Ya, reset back to 2019... How soon we forget record low unemployment, nearly non existent inflation, companies returning to our shores to manufacture things, and record consumer confidence, driving quarter over quarter consumer sales records, and durable goods orders. All good news.. You had to look hard to find any bad news. Not from a lack of trying by the media...

    ----------------------------------

Gas prices are based on a number of factors, from the physical supply being limited due to refinery issues, leaks, spills, or lack of exploration/extraction of the resource.. to market price fluctuations, often due to nothing more than the confidence of the traders that supply will be available in the future.

The biggest single factor is the price of crude on the commodities markets. Remember when the price plummeted in the fall of 2020? No demand, lots of supply.. crude prices on the exchanges actually went negative for a while.. ya, they were paying other traders to take it off their hands.

Refinery issues are another thing.. we have done such a poor job allowing this business to create a surplus of refinery capacity, that any little issue limits the supply, and drives up the price. That's part of what is going on right now. Company E looks at the current business climate, and realizes that investment in restarting an idled refinery is a bad investment.

There is no one single issue that will resolve this.. Adequate supply, from increased domestic production, and market confidence from a government not announcing they are "transitioning away from your product" will go a long way toward getting the prices back down to where they should be.. around $2.50/gal in most places in the US.

All you have to do is look at the period from 2016-2019 to see the effects of a stable supply and marketplace confidence in the industry.

War in Europe?.. ok, maybe a 20 cent bump, if this happened in 2019.. but now, with everything balanced on a razor edge to begin with.. well, we are paying the price for that right now.

And again, it's time to wrap this one up, because as you can see, an intelligent conversation on this issue, cannot be had without involving politics.

Let's hope the political climate toward this vital industry changes soon.
