I know for a fact that the cam in the Buick is a true Stage 1 cam from GM, not a copy from someone else. The only real advantage it may have is being a fresh motor. As Mark stated if a better candidate comes along the car will be considered.
Don't motors usually get a little faster as they break in? I mean, unless you're building a single purpose race motor. But we're not talking about that are we? We were shocked at how fast my Ramrod ran the first year at Pure Stock. That was on the original motor which had never been apart since new (31 years) and had 62k miles on it. First run at Milan a couple days before (first time ever on a drag strip for this car) was a 16.22 in the high 80's spraying brown rusty crap out of the tailpipes all the way down the strip. A little Rubrich magic (plugs, timing) and a little air cleaner cleanout (bugs, nuts, leaves, etc.) and it got down in the low 15's in the mid 90's. At Stanton it ran a 14.22 in the high 90's before snapping the driveshaft and shattering the bellhousing. This was on borrowed Michelin radials with violent wheelhop that would impress Alan Iverson. If the compression's still up there (leak down, cranking test) I'm not so sure a fresh rebuild would gain that much unless like i said, some NHRA liberties are taken. Some stellar tuning can do wonders...........but don't limit the timing to the factory adjustment unless your car was built as a factory hot rod to start with. :Brow: :Brow: :Brow: :Brow:
Welcome to the contraversy board, if you don't have any....come here we'll make some up for ya!! Sounds like fun, both cars should be solid 13 second performers. I hope for the drivers sake, you both run identical ET's and MPH's. And the race ends in a absolute tie. Otherwise..................................... :Comp: :spank: :af: :Smarty: :blast: ou:
Maybe Bozo should get a new hobby... :Brow: Should be an interesting shoot out, but I agree it will never settle it ou: One of the great things about this board is that people can have an opinion and a discussion without being sensored or banned. If you don't like it don't click on it :moonu:
A magazine article came out listing the 50(?) fastest muscle cars of all time, Shelby and Corvette took first and second but wern't counted as muscle cars. Third on the list was the 1970 GS Stage 1, which shocked alot of the Mopar guys, so one of them challenged the Buick guys to a 2 out of 3 heads up race to find out what was faster. Long story short: Buick won.
This coming from someone that's been involved in this style of racing for what ....... 3 years or so ?? What would suit you Gonzo ?? Running a Massey-Ferguson against a slant-6 Dart ? Hell -- they both have wheels .... When you run a shootout like this, you run it with two LIKE vehicles. If you don't get that ....... o No: You can call it controversy .... I call it common sense.
It would be interesting to revisit and see just how similar or different the cars were set up back then. I know that this is a thread all in its self and is not ment to go one way or the other. It would be interesting as I believe their were headers and slicks in the original matchup etc............ If anyone has an original article from Musclecar Review, please post it. I have one but I'm on the road and wont be home for 9 days. I think their would be some action from lots of people if the history of prior races were posted for everyone to read. JIM
I have it somewhere but it may take longer for me to find it then it will take you to get home. Yes they were modified and run on slicks that I remember. The irony to me is I was on the side of the Buick back in the day, now I am being lined up as the new Roy Baddie. Go figure. I agree it will not end the feud just make for some more interesting chatter for the next however many years before two other moron's set themselve's up for ridicule... Darn amazing how serious everyone takes this. We race these girls a few times a year with cars that go much faster than what we will go and no one gets that wound up. I really am enjoying reading what everyone has to say. Casey if you set it up I can get my hands on a virgin Massey or better yet a couple virgin Allis's. I like the vitamine C orange they came in better. Mark
No disrespect Mark, I commend that fact that your stepping up to the plate for this race. :TU: But I must remind you that this event will be marketed as a Hemi vs. Stage 1 shoot-out. Reading many of the posts here and on the other thread it sounds like your happy just making a few competitve passes down the track. Is that correct, or is it your goal to win this race as a Hemi representative? Patrick
Ask Pete and Jimmy about how much hate mail the guys from Dream Car Garage got after thier "Muscle Car Shootout"......people care.
On another subject Ahhh.....the very thing pointed out first by Donny Brass and red flagged by many others including myself..... ou: And folks wonder why people get worked up.
Hey Patrick, I see that your signature has both cars in question represented. How VIRGIN stock are they ? That would be the ULTIMATE way to do a shootout. Have both cars be owned by the same person.
Here's a write-up of Patrick's GSX from Yenko.net, and I believe he touches on the Hemi as well: Patricks wicked GSX
Casey, The Challenger has a rebuild done in the mid 80's before my uncle bought it. I have an old receipt at home showing the work done. 9.5 to 1 pistons to run better on the street and some performance internals. The Buick has a rebuild. Done back in the 80's. It is with Kleiner right now getting a frame-off. So that's out of the question. Owning one of each, I'm partial to the characteristics of both cars. I know from driving my challenger every weekend during the summer, that it takes a very experianced driver to get one of these cars going. Once it is, get out of its way!! The Buick seems to get going a little easier. Easier to control for some reason. I will admit I'm not a guy with any racing experiance. My hats off to you guys who take them down the 1320 runway. As we get closer to this event, I'm sure it will start to take a life of its own. Neither car represented should be at a disadvantage!! Patrick
