I didn't think that you would overlook such an important part but it looks alittle crusty in the photo.
Looks good...question for you (and I'm not being a smarta**) but on all the cars I have seen the bolts for the front spindle arms have the nuts on the outboard side and the heads in...is 70 different (I only have manuals for 71/72)?? Pic attached to show what I mean.... later Tim
I do not have my 70 assembly manual here but I looked at a 69 and 70 5000 series and the nuts appear to be on the inboard side on those. I will double check on the 3-4000 series. All such comments are welcome here.
Tim, That is interesting! I have never, ever seen the bolts go to the outside. I have 5 factory disc set-ups in my shed right now and none of them have the bolts as you pictured. Two sets are from 70 Monte Carlos, 1 set is from a 70 Cutlass, 2 sets are from 71-2 Skylark/GS models.
I do have the 71-2 pics here for a 300o-400o series and it appears the bolt heads are indeed inboard on those.
Wow, I guess Tim is right or the installation varied by factory. 70 Shop Manual, Page 50-45, Figure 50-47 shows the bolts going from inside to the outside for the 43-44000 series.
Isn't that interesting! Looks like 70 was the last year for bolt heads outboard... I am curious why they would have changed the direction of the bolts??? Thoughts?? later Tim edit: man you guys are responding so fast my typing can't keep up! George:71 stage 1, 72 ragtop, 72 GS 455 parts car, 72GS 455 parts car, 71 Skylakr with discs, and 72 skylark with discs....ALL had boltheads inboard...fremont and flint plants.
Tim, Only thing I can think of at this moment is the change in rotors from 70 to 71-2. 70 had the two piece rotor while 71-2 had one piece. Just wondering if there was a clearance problem with the new rotor design.
Except that a couple of my 71 and 72's had the two piece as well....plus putting the nuts on the outbaord end (ie, between the rotor and backing plate)would decrease clearance if anything.... later Tim
Guys, I never paid attention to the bolt direction, but as far as I can figure out the change over from 2-piece to 1-piece front rotors was sometime in May of 1970. This is based on looking at bunches of original cars, while also taking into account the date codes of the parts. I don't know if the assembly manuals note anything or not, as I have never checked. This same time period has also been verified by my Chevelle friends. Duane
Wierd...did anyone have replacement two piece as I have a set in the garage right now off a 72 GS 455...two piece for sure. The 71 GS 455 I sold years ago and still had original u-joints and shocks also had two piece... later Tim
A Rare Sighting of NOS Parts We have closed in on some of the hard to find parts for our resto. Care to guess their function?
The seal must be for the clutch arm ball stud?? Given its a ofur speed car the bolts are way out of my experience (LH one looks like exhaust bolt almost but hard to tell with angle of the picture, doesn't show washer too well). I could cheat and look the PN's up in a book but what fun is that??? later Tim
